Look for the Light in your life

I’ve based everything that I dedicate myself to in the name of finding light in the dark spaces of my mind. The dark spaces are definitely there, but after many many years of living in them and being too afraid to come out, Now that I have, I avoid those dark spaces like the plague. Does that mean they are gone? Absolutely not. They are a part of me, a part of my journey and they have contributed to the Tammy that sits here today and writes this.

I’ve previously written about finding the courage to get out of your comfort zone and to challenge yourself to take a look at what is outside of your bubble of protection. I know that when you have been in a dark place for a very long time, at first the light wont be pleasant for you, your eyes will hurt before they adjust, it will be too bright and your first instinct would definitely be to want to retreat into the comfort of darkness again. It s the reality of any change, it s not going to be smooth from the beginning to the end, there will be initial feelings of discomfort and you will have to push through those and endure it for your mind or your body to make the necessary adjustments needed to accommodate the changes you are making.

So I dedicate my life to looking for the light in my life, in the world and in my mind. The light being metaphorical of course, but also literal. You just have to use your imagination and create a picture in your mind using the analogy of what represents light to you and what represents darkness. Easier said than done? Not really, this is just an exercise one can do even while sitting in the deepest darkest corners of their darkness. close your eyes and try to differentiate between good and bad in your life , happiness and sadness, who contributes to which part and how does it make you feel. I do this regularly, the only thing that has changed is my position. I no longer make the assessment from a dark space, I sit in my light and bask in its warmth now, while closing my eyes and allowing myself the freedom to flow through my life currently and make the necessary assessments. Dark places, spaces and people opposed to light spaces , places and people. What adjustments do I need to make in order to keep the light shining bright?

It’s an everyday thing, not once a week. If you make mental notes and assessments as you live and you keep track of what makes you happy and sad, what makes you uncomfortable and where you are at home, you will be able to live a life where you are present and choosing for yourself instead of being dragged around in the mess other people create for themselves.

Why did I write this? Well, it s because I know that this is not always easy. I get caught up in the tangled lives of others too. I get overwhelmed with emotion and find myself in the dark, even though I know I shouldn’t let myself get there, but the reality is that we will all go to our dark places every now and again. The key is to have such a deeply rooted path in light that you don’t stay there for too long, and you do what you need to do to get yourself out as soon as you possibly can.

As I write this I am in a place of resistance. I am resisting the tug of darkness, by focusing on my light, what good I do have, what I have accomplished already. I cant control what happens around me, but I can control what happens inside my mind, and how I react to what is happening around me. So by making the necessary assessments, I know where not to go when I’m in a challenging space, who not to see and what to avoid. I also know where to go to lift my spirit and where to find the love and joy that I need to pick me up.

It’s really important to know how to get yourself out of a funk before the funk gets to deep in you. Clear out the dusty mindsets and the bad habits and fill your life with habits that grow you and fill you with joy.

So close you eyes and make that assessment of light and darkness in your everyday life. So that you can take a step in the direction of making life happier, lighter, brighter.

Love and Light
